Alistair CookAlistair first appeared with GAOS in Chaos in April 2007. His interest in music, theatre and the arts was influenced by his Mother's deep involvement. A member of school and local church choirs, Alistair's first stage appearance was in the title role of a school production of Oliver! Andrew WilcoxAndrew has been singing all his life, and cannot remember a time when music was not buzzing around in his brain. He began singing in school choirs aged 9, started doing solos in chapel and went on to college reviews. He is a great fan of J S Bach, Gilbert and Sullivan, folk and jazz, and is happy to sing most things. Real happiness is getting all the words of "The Nightmare" song from Iolanthe in the right order and speed!" Bill is seventy years old and is originally from Scotland. Arriving in this area in 1964 from the army he married a local girl from Titchfield and had four children. Moving back to Scotland in 1988 he settled in Dingwill north of Inverness. After the death of his wife he took up singing and joined a local choir and the well known Inverness Operatic Society. He returned to Gosport in 2007 and joined the St Vincent Singers, taking part in the massed choir concert in the Royal Albert Hall, and says that singing in the Hallelujah Chorus was a tremendous privilege. This is Bill's second show with GAOS and he has been made to feel very welcome and is really pleased to be playing the part of Mr Josephs."
Bruce Crook OBEIt seemed only right that, having shared with Bruce the news that he had been recognised with the honour of receiving the OBE in the New Years Honours list, GAOS should cast him in the role of the somewhat hen-pecked, eccentric Lord Brockhurst. Well into his 33rd year with GAOS, this show finds Bruce as our longest serving member active upon the stage. The part is a far cry from that of the cockney Alfie Locke he played in Blitz!, moving from the rough spoken loud mouthed Londoner to the upper class aristocrat. Much to his delight, however, is the fact that, playing a role within the age band in which he comfortably sits, means that he is not required to enter into the spirit of the show by dancing along with the remainder of the cast. Those who know him well agree that this is the best outcome for all!"
Dan ScottThe Boy Friend will be Daniel's 7th show with the society, the first being a decade ago when he performed the title role in Lionel Bart's Oliver! The favourite character he has played with the society was Luiz in Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers. Daniel also enjoyed the part of Gaylord Ravenal in the society's recent concert extracts from Jerome Kern's Showboat. Also a keen musician, Daniel spends most of his spare time, when not rehearsing, playing guitar, bass and mandolin. Due to finish his second year of a National diploma in Acting in the next few months, Daniel intends to take one final year of college study in preparation for drama school auditions and the hopeful prospect of a career in drama and music. - Elaine has been singing and performing since a child, at school, in church and with a musical society, but thought her 'on stage' days were over, after giving up to look after her family. Cajoled to join the society to swell the chorus for Anything Goes, she has enjoyed all the productions since then. After understudying in The Pirates of Penzance and Oliver!, she is pleased to be singing the role of the Duchess in The Gondoliers. Elle joined JuSe when she was 11 years old. As a youngster she was a keen ballet dancer and performed in Peter Pan. She has also been in two school productions; Score and The Rocky Horror Show. Since joining JuSe Elle has taken the roles of The Sultan in Aladdin and the butler in Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dream coat. Elle is really please to be playing Bet and hopes you have a great time tonight! Like many people, Elizabeth started her stage career performing in church concerts in her native Yorkshire. After a long break to bring up her family, in which she encouraged and supported all her children in theatre and dance, she returned to being a performer with the Bury St Edmunds Operatic Society. Elizabeth has been in over twenty shows with many different societies and is looking forward to her role as Mrs. Bedwin." Hannah wowed the Society with her audition piece - All that Jazz from Chicago - which she reprised for the public in the compilation show, Keep it Spicy. She joined GAOS at the beginning of last year and this is her first Principal role. Hilary was enticed to join GAOS by her father, the then MD, to take over the role of prompt. Her first rehearsal saw her join the alto section and since then she has never looked back. Her love of performing stems from her mother who herself was a talented actress, singer and director. Hilary loves performing character roles, both Mrs Harcourt in Anything Goes and Yente in Fiddler on the Roof being among her favourites. Hilary enjoys working with young people and as Chairman of the Junior Section (JuSe) can pass on her knowledge and experience to younger members. In the 31 years she has been with GAOS, Hilary has turned her hand to scenery painting, costumes, props, makeup, and had her first taste of Directing for Gondoliers last April. She is enjoying being back on the other side of the footlights for this show. Jenny's first show with GAOS was as a chorus member in Kiss Me Kate. She understudied Hebe in HMS Pinafore before playing the part of Cousin Nettie in Carousel. She then went on to play the part of Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance, something she wanted to do since she was at school. Jenny had great fun playing Widow Corney in Oliver!, with poor Mr. Bumble having to put up with her hitting and suffocating him every performance. Following that was the very challenging character of Mrs Blitztein in Lionel Bart's lesser known comedy, Blitz!. Jenny was matron for the GAOS Junior Section (JuSe) when they performed The Boy Friend and is looking forward to playing Madame Dubonnet in this version. She invites you to sit back, relax and enjoy a night on the Riviera with us. James has been with GAOS for 28 years and his most recent leading role was that of Mr. Bascombe in Carousel. In our 2000 production of Oliver he played the part of Mr Brownlow but for this show has changed his 'career' to the medical profession to that of a doctor! James is the business manager/fundraiser on the GAOS committee . In the meantime please sit back in your seat and be transported back to Victorian England with the usual melodrama and toe tapping tunes! Joyce has been involved in amateur theatre for over twenty years, since she met her husband, Robin, and is the living proof of the old adage "if you can't beat 'em join 'em". Although she has performed on stage as a reluctant dancer in several musicals and pantomimes (her worst moment was having to step in as a dancer in her own production of Kismet), she is most at home behind the scenes, directing, building a set, wielding a paint brush or working the lights, and is proud to say that she has done every job involved with a production with the exception of musical director. Her other productions for various local societies have included The Vagabond King, Charlie Girl, Anything Goes, Die Fleidermaus and her personal favourite, Hans Anderson. This is Lydia's second production with GAOS, having joined the society for Blitz! last year, playing Mrs Finkelstein, a role which soon got members of the society laughing. She is very excited to have the role of Maisie, as it gives her the opportunity to be 17 again and giggle and laugh through rehearsals. She would like to thank the directors for this opportunity and hopes she doesn't mess up the dancing too much!! Naomi took part in her first production at the age of ten performing as Reuben in Joseph. Since then she has taken roles such as The Sorceress of the North in The Wizard of Oz and Eileen in Back to the 80s. In November Naomi played Francis Locke in Blitz!, and is thrilled to be taking her first principal role as a member of GAOS. She is currently studying GCSE drama and hopes to take art, drama and English at college in September. While not on stage, Naomi enjoys art, writing and playing steel pans. She hopes you love the show.
Nicola MatthewsNicola has been a member of GAOS for a number of years and has enjoyed performing different roles, from Julie Jordan in Carousel to Carol Blitztein in Blitz!. Having played rather straight characters, such as Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance and Casilda in The Gondoliers, she has relished the challenge the character Hortense has brought her. - Like six other members of the cast, this is Peter's second time around in a GAOS production of "Oliver!", but this time he has a lot more to do than when he was a mere paupers assistant. As the respectable and kindly Mr Brownlow, he does, however, avoid the Cockney accent required by many of the cast. Generally a stalwart of the chorus, Peter has nevertheless performed the occasional Principal role, namely Commander Harbison, in "South Pacific", Harrison Howell ("Kiss Me Kate"), The Captain ("Anything Goes") and the Starkeeper/Doctor Seldon in "Carousel". He practises his lines whilst on his long walks in the countryside, which can cause embarrassment when unexpectedly meeting someone whilst declaiming! Much of his time is spent on Society administration, as well as being a core member of the scenery building team and promoting the Society at local events.
Rachel SeymourRachel started with GAOS as Properties Assistant but is now firmly established as Scenery Designer and Co-ordinator, as well as Properties Manager. She caught the theatre "bug" whilst at college and has been hooked ever since, although not on stage as she prefers to lurk in the background! He first became involved in amateur theatre at the age of sixteen when he played the title role in Orpheus in the Underworld at the Theatre Royal, Bath. Since then he has taken leading roles in well over fifty productions, ranging from straight plays, musicals, light operettas, pantomimes (as the dame!) and most of the Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas. His favourite role is Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady. He has directed productions as various as Kismet, The Vagabond King, Salad Days, Half a Sixpence, The Wizard of Oz, Robinson Crusoe and Yeoman of the Guard. Recent productions as Musical Director have included Annie, Calamity Jane, Charlie Girl, Pajama Game, Me and My Girl (for which he received a nomination for a Daily Echo 'Curtain Call' award) and numerous Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas. As well as indulging in his love for musical theatre Robin was for many years Conductor of Sarisbury Choral Society. Sandra joined GAOS "by accident '' in 2003 when her daughter wanted to join the cast for My Fair Lady. She enjoyed the show, found some new friends and has been stalwart in the chorus ever since. Sandra understudied the role of Hattie in Kiss Me Kate - which turned into a principal role 3 weeks before opening night - and had a small role as the strawberry seller in Oliver!. Playing Lady Brockhurst is an opportunity for Sandra to do something her husband tells her she could win medals for - nagging her other half. Sandra hopes you all enjoy the show.
Seb SharpHaving toiled away at college for a few years, Seb is looking forward to performing in his first show with the society. He hopes to progress on to professional work at some point in the future, hopefully as an actor and/or writer. His performance background ranges from straight acting and singing to physical theatre and interpretive dance.
Simon ClarkSimon has been in many shows since he first started performing in the North East of England when he was still a teenager. He joined GAOS in 1990 and has been in the majority of shows since then as the mainstay of the tenor line. However, he has not taken many leading roles, partly due pressure of work and partly because he likes the chorus songs. When he has taken leading roles he seems to have been a baddie in most cases. He has been Sid-El-Car in Desert Song, has been a gangster on both occasions when GAOS has put on Kiss Me Kate and took the role of Moonface Martin in Anything Goes. Continuing the theme of baddies, Simon is again taking on the role of Mr. Bumble in Oliver! though of course he gets his comeuppance in the end. Tom has now been with the society for over 12 years, joining for the minor role of Enoch Snow Jr. in Carousel. Since then Tom has performed in many major roles, from the egotistical Fred Graham in Kiss Me Kate, the imperious Sir Joseph Porter KCB in HMS Pinafore, the senile Ernie Nearmiss in Blitz, the swashbuckling Pirate King in Pirates of Penzance, to the downright sinister Bill Sykes in Oliver. Tom is looking forward to stretching himself as both an actor and a singer in the roles of Pierre and the Usher |
